With its creation of a new entrance, courtyard and specially-built underground gallery for temporary exhibitions, the Exhibition Road project will present the best of modern design, as well as the beauty of the original structure of the V&A. Following a comprehensive international competition, Amanda Levete Architects (AL_A) were engaged for the design and subsequently contacted us. This will be the first courtyard in the United Kingdom to be tiled in porcelain. This choice of material is a specific response to the original building and the collections, which include numerous striking examples of 19th-century decorated ceramics. The courtyard will be used as a place for installations and events and will be served by a glass-fronted café. Building started in January 2014 and the new sections will be opened to the public in early 2017.
