Student Cloud Utrecht
Haiko Meijer of Onix approached us with the request to supply a glazed material suitable for use in prefab concrete elements. Consultation with our supplier of unglazed material in Germany revealed that they produce strips for prefab constructions exclusively for the American market. The architect wanted to produce a cladding material that resembled a 'cloud' as closely as possible: the conceptual departure point for the project. After discussing several development options and assessing several test panels the choice was made for a fairly unstable glaze that inherently offered a rich degree of shades. It was a particularly interesting project for our company because we were not serving the top end of the market but were supplying a cladding for a building to house students: generally viewed as the bottom end of the residential construction market. Because the architect approached the set of requirements in an extremely intelligent manner and because of the large scale of the building (650 students), we were able to agree on a budget.
